How This Calculation Works
1. Enter the pallet length, width, and total height in inches (including the 6-inch wooden pallet). 2. Input total gross weight in pounds including pallet and packaging. 3. The calculator computes PCF density and estimated NMFC freight class.
Worked Real-World Example
A pallet measuring 48″ L × 40″ W × 48″ H has a volume of (48 × 40 × 48) ÷ 1,728 = 53.33 cubic feet. With a total weight of 650 lbs, density = 650 ÷ 53.33 = 12.19 lbs per cu ft (PCF). This places the shipment into Freight Class 85 (density range 12 to 15 PCF).
Assumptions, Tolerances & Limitations
Freight class is also influenced by stowability, handling ease, and liability/damage susceptibility under NMFC commodity codes. Low density (under 1 PCF) results in highest Class 500 rates.

How does freight density determine LTL class?
Higher density cargo (over 50 PCF) requires less truck volume per pound and is assigned Class 50 (lowest rate). Lower density cargo (under 1 PCF) takes up large volume and is assigned Class 500 (highest rate).
What is the formula for freight density PCF?
Density (PCF) = Gross Weight in lbs ÷ ((Length in inches × Width in inches × Height in inches) ÷ 1,728).
Why did my LTL carrier reclassify my shipment?
Carriers use laser dimensioners at freight terminals. If your reported pallet dimensions or weight were lower than scanned measurements, they automatically reclassify the shipment and assess a re-weigh fee.
